Byzantine treasure art today
We were all fascinated by the Byzantine collection presented by Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Jayanti Reddy, Valentino, Alexander Mc Queen, and more brand fashion houses to pay tribute to the glory of Byzantium era.
Byzantium was an empire that spanned East and West for over 1000 years. In this era Jewellery decorated not only the empress but every woman and accessorized male and female clothes.
Nowadays there are still artisans to design, create and sell handmade Jewellery in Byzantine style, I gold or silver, decorated in precious and semi-precious stones.
The jewelry artist’s work demands a solid combination of strong will, talent and of course passion.
Through the years it’s been proved that we have plenty of those and of course great admiration and respect for our ancient ancestors’ art.
It is the artisan and creator’s inspiration with a desire to contribute to this art through the centuries to our days with a strong feeling of responsibility.
Modern collections are the result of this endless need and effort.
Some of the shops with talented and expert artisans which create and trade modern Byzantine handmade Jewellery are set in Plaka, the Old neighborhood in Athens just under the Parthenon. We selected indicatively some traditional and well-established brands like Byzantino, Kallergis, Preludio in Nafplio and more as of the leads below.
Byzantino Jewelry first established the business in 1987. The two owners, Kostas, and Babis decided it was time to show the world their expertise and talent, but mostly their love for these ancient pieces of jewelry they have been admiring in books and museums. This love for ancient Hellenic civilization and especially the way it was represented by jewels, pushed them to start creating reproductions of ancient Hellenic jewels. This way, they discovered the talent and passion of ancient masters who created admirable objects of art unsurpassed until today.
Along with their experience and inspirations from various sources, in their belief that Jewels are not simply to be possessed by their admirers’ but to also be worn and enjoyed, Kostas and Babis started to create new pieces by adapting to the demands of fashion but always crafted using the traditional techniques and showing the same respect and passion for there art.
Since 1987 “BYZANTINO” Jewelry has been located in Plaka on 120 Adrianou street.
Plaka is the Old neighborhood in Athens just under the Parthenon. Although inspired by Ancient works their passion for the art of Jewelry could not be limited to one type only and for this reason in 2002, Kostas and Babis create a space where jewelry from past as well as modern pieces could be presented at the same time. Something like a modern and ancient art museum where everybody can see the timeless progress of jewelry.
The second BYZANTINO is located in the old market, moments away from the first shop, on 17 Pandrosou street., where Kostas and Babis and all the staff await your visit so that you may be guided pleasantly into the past, present and the future of jewelry.
Preludio is in Nafplion, ex-capital of Greece. George Gouveris, the owner, has been in the jewelry business for the last 26 years. He started his career as a salesperson in business in Barcelona, importing precious and semi-precious stones, then as a jewelry salesperson in Athens, Mykonos and other jewelry hubs in Greece.
Having strived in the sales department, he eventually came back to his beautiful home town, the picturesque city of Nafplio, where he opened Preludio in 1989. George is buying the precious and semi-precious stones used for his jewelry by himself.
George Gouveris choosing stones in Afganistan
He has an eye for detail and stone quality and his quest for perfection has taken him to Afghanistan, North Pakistan, Kashmir, Tibet, and West Africa in the past 22 years.
Those of you who have met him will have definitely noticed his in-depth knowledge in the jewelry field, something that has been recognized by various credible guides and magazines, such as San Francisco Chronical, Fromers, ADAC.
The stones bought by George are being used in Greece to produce handmade pieces of exclusive taste and unique quality. The gold jewelry items are 18 carats or 22-carat gold, using different techniques, such as hammering, sandblasting and granulation.
The collection is renewed several times per year, as George only possesses a limited amount of pieces each time to maintain exclusivity; so, keep checking for new pieces. If you visit the shop located in the first capital of Greece, Nafplio, you will see a fantastic collection of sterling silver jewelry as well.
