Creating a new economy around the preowned yachts
The IMO and other organizations create standards to minimize the emissions from marine diesel engines, and top-tier market vendors provide solutions by utilizing cutting-edge technology to silent exhaust pipes while continuously advancing knowledge and technology. Shipyards and vendors have already presented catalytic reducers, exhaust scrubbers for an efficient combustion process, alternative fuel and other. But how about the pre-owned yachts of some age?
We are all familiar with the laws governing used cars and pollution. Isn’t the time right to charting the course for regulating preowned yachts?
Due to a pragmatic and practical mindset, which is also in line with a visionary mindset I genuinely think each of us Superyacht Charter Managers should be the cornerstone by making daily contributions and doing our best to advance the green economy and initiatives for a healthy ecosystem.
A Superyacht Manager is empowered to counsel the Owner well about optional conversions and upgrades to their asset until the maritime law and classification societies impose regulations applicable to pre-owned yachts to convert to eco-friendly units.
When my humble company YACHTDNA was nominated by MITEF in 2020 regarding a project for the Pre-owned Superyachts Economy – I now regret to abandon such a plan for a relocation without arrangements for a continuity, it would have meant something to shake the waters.
The goal of the project was to transform pre-owned Superyachts into environmentally friendly Syperyachts by tackling most elements to reduce the negative effects on the environment. This was to be accomplished through engineering modifications and doable additions relating to waste management using machinery that could be installed even in a sailing yacht – view ExBio NA.
According to the project, vendors or service providers like Emigreen EU (https://www.emigreen.eu/) would grab the opportunity to develop revolutionary procedures and equipment. As an example Emigreen systems reduce exhaust noise, neutralise nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and trap soot particles so they no longer find their way onto the deck, into the swimming pool and into the water around the yacht. This gives the yacht designer more freedom in the positioning of otherwise emission sensitive components.
Likewise, a revolutionary company, with engineering Specialists, XEAMOS.
The highest echelon of Yacht Managers would be encouraged to support environmental practices by motivating Owners to move through with such changes. They would actively endeavor to serve to the green economy, going beyond merely being members of environmental organisations.
The charter Superyachts from the eco-friendly new class would be highlighted in charter platforms with the ‘green leaf’ or an ‘ocean friendly’ logo. The objective was to attract Charterers to charter eco-friendly Superyachts and contribute to the environment while having a great time on luxurious eco-friendly yachts of any age.
Owners could become holders of a dedicated Certificate and could receive a gift, a piece of art from an environmental organization the CA collaborates with, and gain financially from lower consumption. The classification societies could encourage the Owners of preowned yachts by introducing the innovative suppliers and equipment and related material to be introduced properly to the Captains and the Yacht Managers.
How can you, as a Yacht Manager, convince your Owners to seek a retrofit and achieve His asset environmental optimization?
