Southern Morocco Potential Superyacht Destination

Funded Infrastructure of the Moroccan ports opposite Canares islands would help boost the commerce and tourism for Spanish Canares and Morocco.

Taking 91 countries with seaports into account, this study conducted an empirical survey on the broader economic contribution of maritime trade from the point of view of the quality of the port infrastructure and logistics performance. Investments in improving the quality of port infrastructure and its contribution to the economy are often questioned by politicians, investors and the public. A structural equation model is used to provide empirical evidence of the significant economic impact of port infrastructure quality and logistics performance. In addition, the analysis of a multi-group SEM is carried out by dividing the countries into developed and developing economic groups. The results show that it is vital for developing countries to continuously improve the quality of port infrastructure, as this contributes to better logistics performance, leads to higher sea trade and generates higher economic growth and tourist attraction. For this reason, the infrastructure of new ports in the Canary Islands is very important for the economy of Morocco to promote tourism and bilateral relations with other countries.

Maritime Luxury Tourism: In Morocco, maritime tourism is an important element of the 2020 tourism vision. Since 2000, several port projects have been launched to achieve the goals of the Moroccan tourism vision, which is geared towards yacht and sea tourism. Indeed, the two tourism strategies since 2010 and of 2020 have attracted great interest from sea tourism. The number of visitors to international yachts is still below expectations, while the local market does not yet seem to have the means to invest in nautical leisure. Marina Saïdia suffered the last years from the delays affecting all resort projects, while the Bouregreg marina, sheltered from the Atlantic waves, cannot reach top sales in its real estate and recreation model, even if its marina appears to be gradually operating. It seems that some adjustments still need to be made to revive the marina model in Morocco and, in particular, to integrate it into a controversial space. Since the above points are specified in others for the implementation of the maritime tourism plan, it is ideal for the Moroccan government to focus on the infrastructure of new ports in the Canary Islands, because if safe ports were created or expanded, luxury yachts would be protected from the Atlantic waves and the demanding owners or charterers who demand high commercial standards would contribute to the commercial coastal region, a shipping company could possibly connect the Canares faster and easier with the new ports that could offer berths for large ferries or passenger ships.

The importance of new port infrastructure of Canares islands to the economy of Morocco: A region in need of job opportunities seems to be Southern Morocco. The Moroccan people have been confronted with the challenges of political transition, demonstrations by the population that demand social rights and the migration crisis. Now the time has come for a good solution because the Moroccan people are desperate because there is no work. I am in the luxury yachting industry, but a humble voice like David vs. Goliath made me feel that it is my responsibility to raise my voice and try to nudge people in creating conditions that may offer work to people and educational institutions i.e. Marine academies raising perspective for job opportunities and this can only be achieved if the ports of the Canary Islands, which connect Morocco and the neighboring country, have an appropriate infrastructure. The beautiful beaches can be operated with settees organization similar to the brand beaches or named by the regional resorts.

Reasons why this infrastructure is needed: 
The new port will be crucial for Morocco and the Canary Islands, as it will connect by boat in less than two hours which does not only increase trade between the Canary Islands and southern Morocco but also attract yachtsmen into the country requesting trading and entertainment facilities. Exports and imports as well as trade increase and contribute to the normalization of economic relations between two neighboring regions and friends. The new port infrastructure will continue to stimulate inflows of foreign investment as the state increasingly relies on private concessionaires to fund and operate key terminals. The new infrastructure will be also essential to support the government’s goals, promote export-oriented manufacturing, and position the country as a regional hub.

What next: Limited awareness was a challenge due to the lack of available information about the target. For example, suppose the regional authorities are considering making the region known to visitors to other nearby destinations such as Agadir or the Spanish Canary Islands off the country’s west coast. Agadir has long attracted European and Russian visitors, and although its focus on mass tourism on the beach is somewhat different from the potential high-end opportunities developed in the south, a carefully crafted joint advertising strategy could help sell tourist opportunities in the south among other destinations like the neighboring Atlantic Islands. The Canary Islands, also offer the potential for cross-promotion. It is necessary to set up a regular large ferry system between the two, both ideal yachting destinations. However, correct infrastructure will also shelter the superyachts cruising both destinations, ideal for berthing in the winter. The domestic tourism market in Canares and Morocco has growth potential with rising incomes and the expansion of the middle class.

The southern provinces of Morocco offer a combination of natural landscapes and cultural heritage that contribute to a unique tourist offer. However, in order to fully exploit the region’s potential, private and public funding mechanisms are required to build the necessary physical infrastructure. Morocco has proven itself in the development of a tourist offer that covers different market segments. Applying the marine infrastructure experience to new projects in the southern provinces will help the region realize its potential as a sustainable luxury tourism and Superyachting destination.
